Spacing, launched in December 2003, is a new magazine that brings attention to urban landscape and public space issues in Toronto.

Matt B Media was put in charge of the layout/art direction, promotion, and played a leading role in shaping the editorial content. Spacing showcases Blackett's knack for matching the visual tone with the editorial voice. The magazine also highlights his ability to manage a large project (4 months, three times a year, 60 pages) with an even larger cast of contributors (11 photographers and illustrators, 51 writers). In the print media, Spacing and Blackett have been featured in the Toronto Star (twice), National Post and Eye Weekly; and on TV stations Newsworld, CP24 and BookTelevision.

CHALLENGES: Blackett had to decide how to make Spacing stand out in a market that sees niche magazines come and go like the seasons or a Drew Barrymore marriage. The first step in the process was accomplished simply by turning the orientation of the magazine on its side -- we see the world horizontally, rather than vertically, so it seemed natural to have the magazine about a city be viewed in the landscape format. The other step was finding photography that was local and compelling, which was addressed by approaching the newest breed of shutterbugs -- photobloggers. Numerous photobloggers use the public realm as their defacto studio. Since they use their blogs/websites as a portfolio, they were easier to find than going through agents and/or studios.
